EUROPEAN SCIENCE NIGHT 2019
European Researchers’ Night in MU-Sofia, 2019 For à third year, Molecular Medicine Center and Department of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine, MU-Sofia hosted and organised the European Researchers’ Night at Medical University of Sofia with program and various events for young and adults. "The secret of our genes and how to reach them? was the motto of this year;s event. The young scientists from MMC presented the most advanced technologies for reading the secrets of our genes, as well as the possibilities to study simultaneously all changes in our genome, proteome and metabolome. In a quizz, testing the knowledge in genetics, the winners surprisingly were not only biology and medicine students, but also pupils in high schools, people with a wide variety of professions such as a journalist, an auditor, computer specialists. More than 100 visitors of all ages enjoyed the opportunity to visit and view the most up-to-date scientific laboratories for genetic, metabolomic and cell research in Bulgaria. For a next consecutive year, mostly pupils from Sofia high schools were attracted by life sciences. Young scientists and PhD students demonstrated the technologies for microarray analysis, next-generation sequencing, metabolic and metabolomic studies, tissue cultivation and in vitro studies. The greatest fun was in the special children playground. The individual program and activities with the children included drawing and modeling for children and parents of cells and DNA. Looking through a microscope, flasks with colourful liquids making smokes, funny modeling of cells and DNA molecules caused the greatest interest. All participating children received special gifts and certificates. At REFRESH Café “Biobanks - the best investment for our future” Prof. Kaneva, introduced the audience to the role of biobanks for the development of science and personalized medicine, as well as the participation of the Medical University - Sofia and the Molecular Medicine Center in the European biobanking infrastructure - BBMRI-ERIC. Many people were intetested to become donors of biological materials and participate as volunteers in scientific projects. The European Researchers’ Night at MU - Sofia has become a tradition, an interesting and exciting experience for children and adults, who have come to the long and fascinating way of life science. We thank all our students - volunteers from the Faculty of Medicine who participated in the organization of the event. * * * The REFRESH (Relate, Experience, Find Research Everywhere and Share) project for European Researchers’ Night in Bulgaria is funded by the European Commission for the activities of Maria Skłodowska-Curie, contract 818879.
