International Rare Disease Day
Today we celebrate the International Day of Rare Diseases. It was announced on the initiative of the European Organization for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS). The aim is to increase the awareness of the international community about rare diseases, as well as to take action to ensure access to diagnostics and therapies for people living with a rare disease.
A disease is considered rare when it affects less than 1 in 2,000 people. 70% of rare diseases start in childhood and 72% are genetic. More than 6,000 rare diseases have been identified, affecting about 300 million people worldwide. In Bulgaria, the registered patients with rare diseases in 2023 are about 1,300.
