Prostate cancer (PC)
Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer in man after liver and skin cancer. The PC team joined two international projects: IMPACT study - for identification of men with genetic predisposition to PC among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers; and PRACTICAL - for replication study of SNP markers identified through Genome-wide association studies (GWAs) for PC. A 3-year grant was received from the Bulgarian Ministry of Science and Education for studying the association between high risk SNPs identified through GWAs and identification of diagnostic and prognostic gene expression markers in PC. There is a pending project in collaboration with Prof. J. Lubinski, Pomeranian Medical University, for validation of risk SNPs in oncogenes within Slavic population. Collaboration is established also with Dr. M. Vaarala from the Department of Pathology, University of Oulu, for functional analysis of new mutations identified in PC and other type of cancers as well.
