Neuro-endocrine lung cancers
The Oncogenetics Team has recently joined a collaborative study of neuro-endocrine lung cancers. The aim of the project is to study the relationship between immunohistochemical and genetic markers and disease manifestation. The genetic study will involve evaluation of changes in chromosomal region 7p12, (frequent duplications involving the EGFR gene) and studies of the MEN1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia-1) gene, both known to be affected in patients with this type of lung tumors.
Thus, the major goal of the project is to evaluate the relevance and applicability of different marker sets for optimization of diagnostics and prognostics tools. Through this knowledge, we hope to facilitate the evaluation of disease progression and metastasis likelihood, thus enabling the clinicians to provide better treatment for patients with neuro-endocrine tumours of the lungs.
