Diabetes

The MMC is also involved in collaborative research projects, financed by The National Science Fund and Medical University - Sofia , aiming to shed more light on the genetic factors contributing to the development of gestational diabetes, as well as to identify different markers, which will facilitate early diagnosis, better treatment and more reliable prognosis.

The goals of the three year project, financed by the National Science Fund and coordinator by Assoc. Prof. Atanasova, from the Endocrinology Clinical Center are to:

  • do a pilot study, representative for , on the frequency of gestational diabetes mellitus (GD);
  • assess the predictive value of some anthropometric, clinical and laboratory markers in correlation with genetic markers for the illness course, the outcome of  pregnancy and progression to type 1 of type 2 DM;
  • assess the diagnostic impact and the possible influence in clinical practice and bring in some of the new and confirmed biomarkers for the early diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients with GD.

An additional, MU-Sofia funded study will investigate the involvement of multiple genes in the development of gestational diabetes through RNA profiling. These investigations will also be accompanied by detailed phenotype and clinical evaluation of each patient, which will allow us to draw conclusions about the phenotype-genotype relationships in gestational diabetes.
