Core / Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics core ensures access to various databases and analysis software and offers a number of other services. This core makes the data available to the Bulgarian scientific community through the development of user interfaces/ application programming interfaces in combination with powerful analysis tools. MMC actively trains researchers and students in the biomedical sciences in this novel biomedical discipline so they can use these data efficiently.

Equipment:

We have a file server, for the rapid access to the data generated in the MMC by all researchers, as well as 15 PC-workstations for data evaluation and scoring, equipped with multiple-user copies of all software packages and printers. An additional database server harbours the clinical and genetic data generated in MMC and provides access to several public databases that are of interest such as EnsEMBL, BioSQL, SWISSPROT, etc. The application server allows the local installation of different sequence and statistical analysis tools and packages (such as Blast, Fasta, MEME/MAST, R, Emboss, Plink, Bioperl, etc.) as well as some commercial analysis packages (for example GCG). Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) ensures sample tracking and workflow management.

Services

The Bioinformatics Core offers consulting, teaching and training, data analysis support and collaborations in:

  • Basic statistical programmes and specialised free and licensed software for the analysis of large scale data such as SNP data analysis, linkage and haplotype analysis; software for analysis of microarrays, proteomic and metabolomic data, as well as data mining tools;
  • Development and application of biostatistics, pattern recognition, data mining, text mining, and data visualization techniques to complex biomedical and clinical research problems;
  • Assess to specialised local databases with our genetic, gene expression, proteomic and metabolic research, SNPs, mutations and polymorphisms, CNVs and connection with the relevant public databases.
  • Development and providing of knowledge-based data management systems for the discovery of biomedical knowledge, including clinical informatics and management systems for high performance computational methods and algorithms to analyze large volumes of scientific data;
  • Development of user interfaces/ application programming interfaces in combination with powerful analysis tools.
